If you want to know how to increase computer speed, please follow the steps below and you should see a substantial performance increase from your PC.
How clean is your disk?
For our computers to operate at their best they need at least 15-20% of free space on the disk. So basically, if you have lower than 15% of free space you need to go through all the installed software on your machine and deciding if you really need it or not. Remove the stuff that is just sitting there that you have only ever used once. You can use the disk cleanup utility that comes with the Windows operating system to get rid of lots of temporary files and bits of junk.
To run disk cleanup:
1. Click Start .
2. Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup .
3. Disk cleanup will calculate the free space on your computer, which may take a few minutes.
4. After the calculation is complete, confirm that only the following checkboxes are checked:
• Downloaded Program Files
• Temporary Internet Files
• Recycle Bin
• Temporary Files
5. Click OK and Yes when prompted to delete files. Disk cleanup will delete the files and close automatically when finished.
Ok now that you’ve cleaned out all the junk, you want to run the disk defragmenter. This will ensure your files are all packed together on your hard drive and this will give a very good performance increase but only if you run the defragmenter regularly. I recommend defragging every day. To run disk defragmenter:
1. Click Start .
2. Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter .
3. In the disk defragmenter dialog box, select the drive you wish to defragment then click Defragment.
Is your registry tidy?
The registry on your computer contains all the settings and preferences of all the software installed on your PC so it is important that this is kept in good order. Overtime the registry can become cluttered with invalid registry keys from old software installations and sometimes, viruses and spyware can mess up the registry. So if after doing the above, you’re still having performance issues such as blue screen errors or crashes, or maybe your programs take too long to start up then it might be worth scanning your computers registry. You can use a program such as Registry Fix to scan your computers registry for free to see if your registry has any errors. If it does contain errors you will then find out how you can eliminate those errors. Now this program does cost money but it is a lot safer than editing the registry by hand.
Will more RAM help?
Getting more memory for your PC will most definitely help and the performance increase gained is usually very noticeable, however, if you get more memory and don’t have a regular computer maintenance regime then over time your PC will just get really slow again so keep on top of it. For good computer memory I recommend Crucial.com .
